After nearly 75 years of serving county employees, Santa Clara County Federal Credit Union expanded their reach to support new members and new markets. As they evolved, the credit union’s name no longer kept pace with their growth. The organization needed a new name and brand identity – one that would incorporate the full breadth of membership and resonate with a broader audience across the South Bay.

Along with a new name, the credit union wanted to build a bold new brand that would carry them forward for years to come, while paying homage to their history and demonstrating the organization’s growth into a more modern, community-focused financial institution. Grounding in both strategy and storytelling, the first step in this brand evolution was to build consensus around a new name: Mirastar Federal Credit Union.

Renaming for Relevance

Inspired by the spirit and diversity of the credit union’s communities, the name “Mirastar” is filled with symbolism. Across multiple languages, “Mira” holds positive meaning, translating into words such as wondrous, admirable, destiny, and peace. In Spanish, “mira” means “to look.” When put together with “star,” the name can be loosely interpreted as “look at the stars.” The name is an aspirational beacon that illuminates a path forward.

Mira is also a real star in the night sky, standing out within a larger constellation for its rare, visible tail. This tail makes Mira appear as a shooting star, a significant symbol of hope. Mira is also a variable star – one that evolves and changes over time – much like Mirastar Federal Credit Union’s commitment to support the evolving needs of their members. The new name is both inspiring and uplifting – rooted in reality while looking forward to the future.

Building a Brand Story

Mirastar Federal Credit Union is a people-first organization, with a mission to create strong, vibrant communities where prosperity is in reach for everyone. The concept of rising became the foundation for the brand story – with an outlook that stands for possibility, positivity, and presence. A Tagline that Transcends  

 “Rising Together” is the Mirastar brand position – the foundation of the credit union’s DNA that never changes. As an enduring expression of that position, “on the rise” was selected as the tagline that could encapsulate the credit union’s core identity. The tagline speaks to each audience the credit union serves: employees in their constant quest to improve, members actively advancing in mobility and wellbeing, and greater communities working together to be the best they can be.

Unlike many other brands that incorporate the tagline into their logo, Mirastar made the distinct decision to keep this line separate. The intent was deliberate – the story is not about the institution being “on the rise,” but about the people it serves rising. By allowing the tagline to stand on its own, it becomes a flexible expression that shifts naturally across contexts – from brand elements to marketing outreach. Whether paired with the name of a place or a photo of a person, the message remains clear: they’re on the rise.

Mirastar set out to create a bold, vibrant logo – one capable of capturing the spirit of the brand and symbolizing what the organization stands for in a single visual element. A friendly, character-rich typeface brings out warmth, with “Mirastar” elevated in scale and size above “Federal Credit Union.” A coastal-inspired color palette with blue and green hues reflects the energy of the South Bay region, grounding the identity in a sense of place while reinforcing the brand’s forward-looking optimism.

The most distinctive element of the credit union’s new logo is the Mirastar symbol. Thoughtfully crafted, the brand symbol represents prosperity for all and a community of individuals on the rise. The central star inside the logo serves as a source of connection, signifying guidance, aspiration, and forward momentum. Extending outward, the four arrows point to the cardinal directions, representing the many paths Mirastar members can take as they follow their dreams. Together, the four quadrants speak to the diversity of cultures and perspectives that shape the communities Mirastar serves.
