Bank Rebranding Best Practices – Lessons from Leading Financial Institutions
A strategic look at when to rebrand, what it takes to succeed, and how leading financial institutions are building brands for the future
Bank Rebranding at a Glance:
- Smart banking brands are living ecosystems reinforced by experience, culture, and consistent storytelling
- Banks that rebranded saw a 13.6% increase in compound annual growth rate
- Visual cues, modern designs, and consistent touchpoints that emphasize human connections can help bank and credit union brands stand out
Strong brands build value for financial institutions. According to The ROI of Rebranding Report, three out of four financial brands said their brand value critically impacts their business value. Regularly assessing brand relevance and resonance helps banking leaders understand their current brand challenges, mitigate risk, and position their organizations for growth.
Why Financial Institutions Rebrand
A bank or credit union may need to rebrand when new or younger customers are increasingly difficult to attract, in response to a merger or acquisition, or because competitors are gaining market share. Other considerations include whether the financial institution has expanded their customer base or product offerings beyond what the existing brand reflects.
“Banks that rebranded saw a 13.6% increase in compound annual growth rate (CAGR), compared to the U.S. average of 7.4%,” according to The ROI of Rebranding. Getting to growth starts not with a new logo, but with understanding an organization’s DNA. The financial institutions that win will be those whose brands effectively convey who they are, what they believe in, and the value they bring. Even more, a strong brand story must be supported by a clear brand strategy. “Brand strategy allows banks and credit unions to stand out among their competitors, connect with audiences that matter, and serve as the engine for business success,” says Juliet D’Ambrosio, Chief Experience Officer at Adrenaline.
How to Succeed at Rebranding
Rebranding is the largest institutional investment a bank or credit union can make, and organizations that approach the process with a data-driven framework are setting themselves up for success. This means establishing key performance indicators that are reasonable, reachable, and relevant, and then tracking the impact of the rebrand at a consistent cadence. Successful financial institution rebrands also include ensuring consistency across all touchpoints – from branches and websites to mobile apps and marketing – while equipping employees to champion the new brand. Indeed, 83% of institutions surveyed by Adrenaline strongly agree that rebranding has a positive impact on company culture.
In a competitive market where every financial institution offers similar products – like checking and savings accounts, credit cards, and loans – a distinctive brand identity is a powerful way to stand out in a sea of sameness. Adrenaline has executed hundreds of bank and credit union rebrands, and the most successful have three things in common: the brands are ownable, memorable, and connect with consumers. Here are some examples of financial institutions we’ve recently rebranded and why we love them.
Space for More: Openland Credit Union
After 75 years serving Texas communities, Associated Credit Union of Texas (ACU) knew it was time for a change. The brand had limited name recognition and lacked clarity and consistency in the marketplace. The credit union recognized it needed stronger brand relevance to attract younger generations who value financial institutions that feel modern, authentic, and relationship-driven. They also wanted a name that would reflect a spirit of openness, optimism, and opportunity – one that would carry both the organization and their members into the future. The result is Openland Credit Union, a brand designed to embody possibility and progress.
Why we love it: Incorporating a logomark known as “The Doorway” enables Openland Credit Union to visually symbolize the power of possibility. Vibrant brand colors and modern typography create a more contemporary, emotionally resonant brand identity. This identity now positions the credit union to strengthen brand awareness, deepen human connection, and establish a stronger competitive presence in today’s crowded financial landscape.
Reaching Higher: Vallant Bank
As two financial institutions were preparing for a merger, Pinnacle Bank and Morris Bank knew the unification provided the right opportunity to rebrand. They wanted a new brand that would strengthen their presence in small-town and rural Georgia while continuing to reflect their community commitment. At the same time, they wanted to create a strong foundation for future expansion. The goal was to elevate the brand without losing the authenticity and familiarity that define local banking in these core markets. The result was Vallant Bank, positioned around “Reach Higher” and the promise of “Local strength. Limitless reach.”
Why we love it: With a more sophisticated, modern presence, the new brand reflects deep community roots paired with forward momentum. The design visually reinforces this duality, with the upward soaring lines of the “V” and confident color palette expressing movement, ambition, and momentum. Across marketing and the branch experience, the new brand reinforces Vallant Bank’s values through every touchpoint, communicating their commitment to putting relationships before transactions.
Connecting Possibilities: Beginnings Credit Union
A brand that began in 1953 as a credit union with ties to Cornell University, CFCU Community Credit Union had lost brand relevance as the financial institution expanded its footprint and audience. The CFCU name no longer reflected who the credit union had become, impacting member and employee loyalty and holding back institutional growth. The credit union needed a brand that would appeal to Gen Z while remaining relevant and relatable across generations. The result was Beginnings Credit Union, a new name and brand platform built on the belief that every financial journey starts somewhere – and that the credit union is there to connect possibilities every step along the way.
Why we love it: The new brand feels fresh and modern while remaining rooted in the communities that Beginnings Credit Union serves. Extending beyond the identity itself, the brand platform and branch experience are designed to meet members at every stage of life and help them move confidently toward what’s next.
Smart Banking Brands Evolve
Brands are living ecosystems that are reinforced by experiences, employees, culture, and storytelling. The strongest brands evolve, adapting to changing markets, consumer expectations, and growth opportunities. While Openland Credit Union, Vallant Bank, and Beginnings Credit Union each introduced new names and refreshed brand strategies, they remained true to the values that their customers, members, employees, and communities know and trust. These rebrands succeed because they preserve what makes each institution distinctive while creating a stronger platform for future growth.
