A Smarter Use of Space for Evolving Member Expectations

The Scenario:

For more than 70 years Star One Credit Union has served as of one of Silicon Valley’s largest member-owned financial institutions. In the midst of a brand refresh, the credit union needed their physical environments to deliver on a renewed brand promise while supporting the evolving expectations of members. The opportunity for branch upgrades was about more than aesthetics. Star One aimed to modernize the branch experience, update service delivery, and position the organization for continued growth in the highly competitive San Francisco South Bay region.

Remaining largely unchanged for decades, the credit union’s existing branch network had seen little evolution. While still functional, these branch environments no longer reflected the expectations of an increasingly digital, highly educated, and upwardly mobile membership base. At the same time, Star One needed to maintain strong relationships with their legacy members – who value enduring consistency, trusted relationships, and financial stewardship. This dual imperative created a clear challenge: design a branch experience that balances efficient transactions with more consultative, relationship-driven interactions that deliver member value.

The Solution:

Partnering with Star One, Adrenaline approached the engagement as a branch transformation grounded in experience strategy – integrating space design, service delivery, and environmental expression to support Star One’s growth goals. Essential priorities for the space included privacy, flexibility, and flow, particularly in high-volume locations. Leveraging deep discovery sessions, the work focused on both legacy and prospective member needs. These insights informed a design framework capable of supporting a wide range of interactions, from quick transactional visits to more complex financial conversations.

At the core of the solution was rethinking how the branch functions. The design prioritizes a more consultative model while maintaining efficiency, creating an environment that supports both speed of service and depth of engagement. Spaces are organized to provide greater choice, allowing members and staff to seamlessly move between transactional and advisory interactions. In the end, the renewed branch environment reflects a balance of purposeful simplicity and intentional expression.

The Story:

For Star One, the transformation represents a thoughtful evolution of the branch experience – one that reflects both where the organization has been and where it is going. Carefully placed brand elements are integrated with selective moments of color, messaging, and visibility. A restrained architectural palette creates clarity and consistency, ensuring the experience feels both elevated and authentic.

To support ongoing operations, Adrenaline implemented a phased construction approach that allowed the branch to remain fully operational throughout renovation, minimizing disruption while enabling transformation.

The spatial layout was reimagined to better support consultative engagement. By streamlining and right-sizing the traditional teller line, the design uses reclaimed space for a broader range of semi-private and flexible meeting areas. These environments provide greater privacy and adaptability, empowering staff and members to choose the setting that best supports their needs.

A concierge-style service model further enhances the experience. An entry perch and rotating lobby leader greet members upon arrival, guiding them through the branch for a more intentional and personalized flow. Members can move seamlessly between quick transactions and more in-depth conversations, supported by a layout that prioritizes both access and privacy. Staff are empowered to deliver a more personalized experience, guided by a service model that aligns with the physical environment.

Throughout the branch, moments of brand expression are integrated into the environment in a measured and strategic way. A neutral architectural palette creates a clean, cost-conscious foundation, allowing brand elements to stand out with intention. Environmental graphics are selectively deployed to reinforce identity without overwhelming the space.

Color, messaging, and visual cues are used to create energy and visibility, particularly in high-impact areas such as street-facing elements and key interior touchpoints. This approach allows the space to feel fresh and engaging while maintaining a clear sense of balance and purpose.

As the first transformation reaches completion and additional locations move into design, the branch transformation program establishes a scalable foundation for future growth. With multiple branches planned for renovation, Star One is building a consistent yet flexible approach to evolving their network – one that connects space, service, and experience to support both current members and future audiences.
