The Scenario:

For nearly 100 years, Virginia Credit Union (VACU) has served members at every stage of their financial lives through trusted guidance and a strong local presence. As VACU continued to expand and modernize their branch network, the credit union saw an opportunity to create a new ground-up location that would elevate their brand presence and member experience at the same time. After partnering with Adrenaline on multiple branch projects in the state, the credit union again engaged the brand experience experts on VACU’s first ground-up prototype branch, serving as a model for future expansion in one of the region’s fastest-growing areas.

Located within the new Courthouse Landing mixed-use development in Chesterfield County, the branch needed to do more than provide convenient access to financial services. VACU wanted a destination that would stand out within the community, create a stronger connection to the brand, and support the organization’s evolving consultative and advisory approach to member service. The challenge was to design a flexible prototype that felt elevated and distinctive while remaining scalable across future locations.

The Solution:

For the project, Adrenaline developed a ground-up branch design strategy focused on brand visibility, member experience, and long-term scalability. Drawing on the credit union’s existing North Star vision and branch kit of parts, Adrenaline’s team introduced new architectural features and branded touchpoints that elevate the environment. The branch’s prominent corner location informed a site plan that maximizes visibility from multiple roadway frontages, creating a stronger presence within the rapidly growing development. Inside, an expanded palette of finishes, furnishings, and fixtures introduces a new level of sophistication while maintaining consistency with VACU’s established design language.

The Story:

As Virginia Credit Union’s first ground-up construction prototype branch, Courthouse Landing represents an important milestone in the evolution of the credit union’s retail network.

From the exterior, the branch projects a commanding presence within the growing community. The development’s neutral architectural palette allows VACU’s signature brand colors and signage to stand out. These features create immediate recognition while maintaining flexibility for future applications across the branch network.

To maximize visibility, the building was strategically positioned so two facades run parallel to high-traffic roadways. An enhanced signage package, including a prominent pylon sign, strengthens wayfinding and illuminates branch presence in the area. These elements ensure the location serves as both a community beacon and an identifiable projection of the brand.

Rising two stories, the dramatic entry spotlights a sense of openness, as expansive glass fills the space with natural light. A visible focal feature adds depth and dimension for a memorable first impression and meaningful connection between the branch and the community.

The unique vestibule serves as the branch’s signature design moment. A custom wall covering and suspended sculptural element reinforce VACU’s brand identity while helping establish a sense of place in the growing Courthouse Landing development. Designed as a visible expression of the brand, the feature helps position the branch as a recognizable destination within the community.

Inside, the design deftly balances sophistication and functionality. An expanded palette of finishes, furnishings, and fixtures provides visual interest while remaining consistent with VACU’s existing brand.

The branch feels both familiar and distinct, building on the credit union’s established design language while introducing new opportunities for brand expression.

Every design decision throughout the space supports the credit union’s goal of creating meaningful member experiences. Open sightlines, welcoming consultation spaces, and a modern aesthetic work together to create an environment that feels approachable and distinctly VACU.

Carefully integrated interior elements create brand moments throughout the footprint without overwhelming the design and architecture. This thoughtful integration balances visual impact with a sense of warmth and authenticity.

The result is a branch that functions not only as a place for banking, but also as a visible expression of the credit union’s commitment to their members, communities, and their future.

Beyond a single location, the Courthouse Landing model establishes a scalable framework for future growth. By combining an adaptable architectural palette with enhanced brand expression, the prototype can be replicated and refined as VACU continues to expand and modernize their network.

The project also builds on Adrenaline’s broader partnership with VACU, including the conversion of 17 former Member One Credit Union locations throughout central and southwest Virginia following the merger of the two institutions.
