Branch Marketing At A Glance:

  • Branches are evolving from traditional delivery channels into powerful marketing engines that build awareness, support acquisition, and deepen customer relationships
  • Maximizing branch marketing requires connecting four key elements: the right strategy, the right place, the right message, and the right delivery
  • Physical and digital channels create greater impact when they work together across the customer journey, connecting location with brand presence and customer experience

For the last decade or more, industry forecasts about the demise of physical retail channels have been hard to miss. The predictions go like this: e-commerce would make retail stores obsolete, while digital banking would do the same to branches. Yet across the retail spectrum, brands of all sizes continue to invest in their in-person locations because they recognize something fundamental. A well-designed physical presence does more than facilitate a purchase. Retail stores with physical proximity and in-person engagement build awareness, create connection, and make a brand real.

Banking is seeing the same dynamic play out. While it’s true that financial institutions have invested heavily in digital capabilities to make everyday banking easier and more convenient, that’s only half of the story. At the same time, many of the country’s most recognizable bank brands are making significant commitments to their physical networks by opening new locations and modernizing existing ones. The reason is increasingly clear. The branch isn’t simply a place where banking happens – it’s one of a financial institution’s most valuable marketing channels. But the experience at the branch must be intentional to be impactful.

To make the most of their networks, banks must think beyond the traditional role of the branch as a delivery channel and intentionally harness its broader marketing value. How to unleash that power was the focus of Adrenaline Chief Experience Officer Juliet D’Ambrosio’s recent presentation at the ABA Bank Marketing Conference. In her industry insights session, Juliet explored how financial institutions can close the value gap between the investment in branches and how effectively banks leverage locations to build their brands and grow their businesses.

Rethinking the Role of the Branch

Maximizing the marketing potential of the network begins with understanding the evolving experience at the branch. Through the last 24 months, consumers used branches more than any other channel to get advice, solve problems, and acquire new products, according to Accenture. Transactions must still be supported, but that’s no longer the branch’s primary purpose. Traditionally, financial institutions measured branches largely as delivery channels, with performance tied to transactions, deposits, account openings, and other location-level activity. But that view misses much of the value a physical presence creates.

Like other retail locations, branches create visibility in a market, signal stability, and provide a tangible expression of the brand. The impact of the branch also extends beyond its four walls. Research across broader retail consistently demonstrates a “halo effect,” in which opening a physical location doesn’t just stay at the store – locations increase online traffic and sales within the surrounding market, as well. For financial institutions, that physical presence is particularly important because consumers continue to turn to branches for higher-value interactions. That helps explain why branch investment is surging across the industry.

growing bank branch investment

From new locations in growth markets to comprehensive network renovations, leading banks are investing billions of dollars in their physical presence. These investments aren’t a rejection of digital banking but reflect a more integrated understanding of how channels work together. Customers may discover a brand through a branch, research online, open an account digitally, and return to a banker for guidance later. The consumer experiences all of those interactions as one bank brand. The opportunity for financial institutions is to make the branch work just as purposely as every other part of that journey.

Closing the Branch Marketing Value Gap

Transforming the branch into a stronger marketing engine requires aligning four elements: the right strategy, in the right place, with the right message, through the right delivery channel.

  • Right Strategy – Branch marketing should begin with business and brand objectives, not individual campaigns. The goal is to understand what each location needs to accomplish, whether that’s building awareness, acquiring customers, or deepening relationships. That means considering the entire customer journey and identifying where the branch can influence awareness, trust, consideration, and acquisition.
  • Right Place – Every branch and every area within it has a different job to do. A new location in a new market may need to bolster awareness, while an established branch may focus more on engagement and cross-sell. Inside, exterior-facing communications can attract prospects, while transaction, waiting, and consultation zones provide opportunities for progressively deeper interactions. Effective merchandising puts the right message in the right place based on customer behavior and dwell time.
  • Right Message – Localization matters at the branch. It’s not just a monolithic brand in a place. A branch should consistently express the institution’s brand values while reflecting the local community and people who live and work there. Thoughtful local elements can demonstrate that a financial institution understands the market rather than simply occupying space within it.

More messaging does not necessarily mean more effective communication. Branches can easily accumulate posters, brochures, signage, and promotional materials until individual messages end up competing for attention. A stronger strategy prioritizes fewer, more meaningful communications organized around the customer journey, where messages will have more impact.
  • Right Delivery – Financial institutions need the right mix of static and digital communications. Static elements remain valuable for evergreen brand storytelling, while digital signage gives marketers greater flexibility to tailor content by campaign, market, audience, or time of day. The right delivery also enables the branch network to function more like a coordinated marketing system, with content that can evolve as priorities change.

For branch marketing, exterior messages can build awareness and support acquisition, while interior communications can educate, deepen relationships and empower staff to have better conversations. Across both, brand storytelling and product messaging should work cohesively to center customer needs rather than operate as disconnected campaigns. With digital signage, the key is not adding technology for technology’s sake. Every screen, sign, and message should have a clear role in supporting the customer experience and the institution’s larger goals.

Turning Physical Presence into Marketing Power

The future of banking isn’t a choice between physical and digital. Each channel has a distinct role, and their value increases when they work well together. Digital makes banking fast and convenient. The branch creates physical presence, human connection, and an opportunity to make the brand real. That requires moving beyond a narrow view of the branch as an expensive delivery channel and recognizing the broader role across the marketing funnel. When strategy, place, message and delivery work together, the branch can build awareness in the market, strengthen consideration, support acquisition, and deepen existing customer relationships.

In that model, the branch isn’t separate from marketing. It is marketing – a highly visible, always-on expression of the brand with the power to influence both physical and digital engagement that makes brands mean more.
